Lindisfarne- Holy Island

Sea Cliff in Holy Island

Holy Island also known as Lindisfarne is a small tidal island off the coast of Northumberland in northeast England. It is connected to the mainland at low tide by a causeway. Although it may seem like a remote and tranquil location, archaeologists have uncovered evidence that people have inhabited the area since the Iron Age. The island was an important place of pilgrimage during Medieval times and today it is home to one of the oldest churches in England, Lindisfarne Priory. Visitors can explore this historic site or simply enjoy the stunning coastal scenery and rich wildlife.

Birders will delight at some of the rare bird sightings on offer, such as puffins, arctic terns, woodlarks and skylarks. Other popular attractions include boat trips across nearby Farne Islands and visiting Lindisfarne Castle which dates back to the 1500s. For those wishing for more spiritually-minded pursuits, visitors can take part in guided meditations inside the priory chapel or attend daily services at St Mary's Church to appreciate its incredible history. There is no doubt that exploring Holy Island can be both a moving historical journey and an opportunity for peaceful contemplation - well worth taking time out from our busy lives to experience a truly special destination.
